Everyone who walks, talks or growls in Oz. Each entry names the chapter it comes from, and says how much of what you read here has been checked against the text.
- Aunt Em Dorothy's aunt, who raises her on the Kansas prairie and in time comes to live in Oz.
- Betsy Bobbin A girl from Oklahoma, shipwrecked into the Land of Ev with her mule Hank.
- Billina A yellow hen from Kansas, sharp-tongued and practical, carried to the Land of Ev with Dorothy.
- Button-Bright A small boy who is perpetually lost and entirely untroubled by it.
- Dorothy Gale A small girl from the Kansas prairie, carried to Oz by a cyclone with her farmhouse and her dog Toto.
- General Jinjur The girl who raises an Army of Revolt and takes the Emerald City from the Scarecrow.
- Glinda The Good Witch of the South, sought at the end of Dorothy's journey and again when the Emerald City needs setting right.
- Jack Pumpkinhead A man of wooden limbs and a carved pumpkin head, made by Tip and brought to life by the Powder of Life.
- Mombi The old woman of the Gillikin country who raises Tip, and who works more magic than the law of Oz allows her.
- Ozma The rightful ruler of Oz, hidden in boyhood as Tip until Glinda undid the enchantment.
- Polychrome The Rainbow's daughter, who dances, and who is left behind whenever the rainbow lifts.
- Sir Hokus A knight of long ago, released from enchantment and rather out of his own time.
- The Cowardly Lion A great beast who believes himself a coward and wishes for courage, met on the road through the forest.
- The Gump A flying thing assembled from sofas, palm leaves and a mounted head, brought to life to carry the company out of the palace.
- The Hungry Tiger A great tiger who longs to eat fat babies and never does, because his conscience will not let him.
- The Nome King The king beneath the mountains, whose armies and enchantments trouble Oz again and again.
- The Patchwork Girl Scraps, sewn from a patchwork quilt and brought to life by the Powder of Life — far too lively to be anyone's servant.
- The Saw-Horse A wooden saw-horse brought to life to carry Jack Pumpkinhead, and hard to keep still ever after.
- The Scarecrow A straw-stuffed man lifted down from his pole in a Munchkin cornfield, who wishes for brains.
- The Shaggy Man A road-worn wanderer who carries the Love Magnet, and stays in Oz once he finds it.
- The Tin Woodman A woodman of tin, found rusted still in the forest and freed with an oil-can, who wishes for a heart.
- The Wicked Witch of the West The witch who rules the Winkies in the west, and who Dorothy is sent to destroy.
- The Winged Monkeys A band of monkeys bound to obey whoever holds the Golden Cap, three times and no more.
- The Wizard of Oz The balloonist from Omaha who ruled the Emerald City on reputation alone, and later came back to learn real magic.
- The Woggle-Bug An insect enlarged upon a screen and never reduced again, Highly Magnified and Thoroughly Educated.
- Tik-Tok A copper machine man who thinks, speaks and moves only for as long as he is wound.
- Tip A boy brought up by Mombi in the Gillikin country, who runs away with a pumpkin-headed man of his own making.
- Toto Dorothy's little black dog, carried out of Kansas with her and rarely far from her side.
- Trot A seaside girl who reaches Oz with Cap'n Bill and remains there.
- Uncle Henry Dorothy's uncle, a Kansas farmer, who in time comes to live in Oz.
